Looking for free ICF CCE courses before your credential expires? You have more options than most coaches realize. Every three years, ACC, PCC, and MCC holders need 40 CCE units to renew. Buy those hours as packaged courses and you can spend $500 to $1,500 per renewal cycle, on top of the renewal fee itself.

A meaningful share of those 40 units can be earned for free. The trick is knowing which sources are legitimate and how each one’s fine print works. We verified every option below in July 2026: what it costs (nothing), what it’s worth in credits, and the catch to watch for.

ICF CCE Requirements: Know Your Numbers First

You need 40 CCE units every three years. At least 24 must be Core Competency units, including a mandatory 3 units in coaching ethics. Up to 16 can be Resource Development, and ICF allows up to 16 self-study hours to count toward that Resource Development bucket.

Keep this split in mind as you read. Several free sources below award Resource Development units, which are capped, so you can’t build an entire renewal out of them. The scarce resource is Core Competency units; treat free CC sessions as the priority.

The Free ICF Ethics Course: 3 CCE Units You Need Anyway

The single highest-value option on this list. ICF requires every credential-holder to earn 3 Core Competency units in ethics each renewal cycle, and ICF itself offers a complimentary course that satisfies exactly that requirement. The ICF Coaching Ethics Course is a scenario-based walkthrough of the ICF Code of Ethics worth 3 CCE units in Ethics on completion.

The catch: none, really. This is the closest thing to free money in coach CE. If you hold an ICF credential and haven’t taken it this cycle, start here.

Coacharya’s Free Weekly Webinars: 1 CCEU Per Session

Coacharya, an ICF-accredited coach training school, runs free webinars most Wednesdays. Each is worth one credit for 60 minutes of attendance:

  • Future of Coaching (2nd Wednesday): 1 Resource Development unit
  • Hero’s Journey (3rd Wednesday): 1 Resource Development unit
  • Masters in Coaching (4th Wednesday, led by an MCC-level coach): 1 Core Competency unit

Registration is free but required. Watching past recordings on their YouTube channel also qualifies as self-study Resource Development.

The catch: you must claim your credit within 7 days of attending. Miss the window, lose the unit.

The credits are free. The catch is always in the claiming.

Coaching Café: Free CCEs Every Friday (If the Timezone Works)

Australia’s Open Door Coaching runs the Coaching Café, a free half-hour webinar every Friday at 12:00pm AEST that awards ICF CCEs for attending.

The catch: attendance is tracked via Zoom, and you must be present the entire 30 minutes to earn the credit. AEST also means Thursday evening in North America, around 10:00pm ET.

Your ICF Membership Already Includes Free CCEUs

If you pay ICF dues, skipping these is leaving credits on the table:

  • ICF Communities of Practice. Themed webinar series (leadership coaching, health and wellness, internal coaching, and more) with live sessions plus an on-demand archive. Most sessions earn CCE or RD units.
  • Your local ICF chapter. Chapter educational events routinely award CCEs and are typically free or near-free for members.

The catch: “free” here means included with membership. Worth maximizing if you already pay dues, not a reason to join.

Center for Coaching Certification’s Free Monthly Webinars

The Center for Coaching Certification hosts free monthly webinars (LinkedIn Live and Zoom) on coaching skills and leadership topics. They count toward CCC’s own certification CE requirement and can qualify as ICF Resource Development where eligible. Past sessions are archived on YouTube for self-study hours.

The catch: these are not blanket ICF-CCE-stamped. Treat them as professional development or RD hours and keep the session agenda for your records.

The Self-Study Rule: 16 Free CCEUs Hiding in Plain Sight

ICF accepts up to 16 hours of self-study toward Resource Development each cycle: coaching books, recorded webinars, podcasts, research. Most coaches are already doing this and simply not logging it. Keep a simple record (title, date, hours, one takeaway) and claim it at renewal.

What About NBHWC Credits?

If you’re a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, the CE landscape looks different: 36 hours every three years, and genuinely free approved options are much rarer. We break down every NBHWC continuing education route, with real prices compared, in our companion guide: Health Coach Continuing Education: Every Way to Earn Your 36 NBHWC Hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CCE units do I need to renew my ICF credential?

40 CCE units every three years: at least 24 in Core Competencies (including 3 in ethics) and up to 16 in Resource Development.

Can I renew my ICF credential entirely with free CCE courses?

Close to it. Between the free ICF ethics course (3 units), weekly free webinars (1 per week), and the 16-hour self-study allowance, a disciplined coach can cover most of the 40 units at no cost. The constraint is the Core Competency minimum, so prioritize free sessions that award CC units, like Coacharya’s Masters in Coaching series.

Is the ICF ethics course really free?

Yes. ICF offers it at no cost to credential-holders, and it awards the 3 ethics CCE units required every renewal cycle.

Do webinar recordings count for ICF credit?

Recorded sessions generally count as self-study Resource Development, capped at 16 hours per cycle. Live attendance is usually required for Core Competency units.

What happens if my ICF credential lapses?

If your credential expired less than a year ago, ICF may still allow renewal with additional CCE units for each lapsed month. Check ICF’s renewal page for current policy.
