Overview
“You don’t always have to color between the lines. And the most powerful leaders are the ones who figure out how to bring out the best of both, not choose between them.“ Mike Sweeney
In this episode of CoachConnect, Dr. Diego Salinas and Mike Sweeney; executive coach, organizational psychologist, and former US Army Cavalry Officer, dig into what truly drives high performance in leaders, and why the best leadership coaching embraces paradox rather than resolving it.
Mike opens with his origin story. From being told he wasn’t leading well at a wine company to sitting across from an organizational psychologist who cracked him open with a single well-timed question, he discovered that the most powerful coaching isn’t about answers, it’s about holding a mirror up so people can reveal themselves to themselves.
He unpacks one of the most compelling frameworks of the episode, polarity management. And why the most effective leaders are not those who choose between drive and presence, focus and flexibility, or strength and humility, but those who learn to bring out the best of both simultaneously. This is not muddy compromise, he argues. It is the mandala, black and white, held together.
Together, Diego and Mike explore why the how question is almost never the real question, why unsolicited advice lands the same as criticism, how movement and nature unlock depth in coaching that a Zoom call rarely can, and why men in particular need spaces where honest vulnerability, not polished vulnerability, is welcome. They also discuss Mike’s adventure coaching retreats, where clients hike, ski, and move their way toward clarity alongside their coaching work.
