Overview

“Coaching is all about being on that journey with your client as they find the solutions, build the habits, and come over those emotional obstacles to reach that epiphany.” Dr. Justin James Kennedy

In this episode of CoachConnect, Dr. Diego Salinas and Dr. Justin James Kennedy dig into the neuroscience behind lasting behavior change, and why understanding neuroplasticity and coaching makes coaches more effective, more confident, and more credible.

Dr. Kennedy opens with his personal origin story. After a road accident led to a traumatic brain injury, a subdural hemorrhage, and a coma, he found himself fascinated by the process of his own brain coming back online. As a result, what began as a deeply personal recovery journey became a lifelong mission to understand and apply neuroplasticity in coaching and organizational development.

He unpacks the core science in coach-friendly terms. From long-term potentiation and synaptic change to the role of glutamate and GABA in behavior change, Dr. Kennedy makes the neuroscience accessible without dumbing it down. Furthermore, he explains why lasting change takes time, why motivation alone is never enough, and why the brain’s habit-forming mechanism is the same whether the habit serves you or not.

Together, Diego and Justin explore why social connection is the single most powerful driver of health and well-being, how human coaching and AI are complementary rather than interchangeable, and what the newly created Neuroplastician credential means for the future of the coaching profession.
