Getting diagnosed with MS can be overwhelming, and it's important to acknowledge and process all the emotions that come with it - anger, sadness, shock, stress, or whatever you're feeling. However, it's also crucial not to dwell on these emotions for too long because there are actionable steps you can take to manage your condition.

Chances are, you've already consulted with a neurologist who diagnosed you and discussed medication options. But there's more to managing MS than just medication. Lifestyle changes can play a significant role, and you may have questions about what changes to make and how to start. In this blog post, we'll explore various lifestyle strategies that can help you navigate life with MS.

Diet and Nutrition

  • Adopt a Balanced Diet: Focus on consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to provide your body with the necessary nutrients for optimal functioning.
  • Consider Specific Dietary Approaches: Some individuals with MS find that certain diets, such as the Overcoming MS (OMS) diet, the Swank diet, the Wahls Protocol, the Best Bet Diet, or a Mediterranean-style diet, can help manage their symptoms. Explore these options and choose one that resonates with you and has supporting research.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough fluids is crucial for overall health and can also help manage certain MS symptoms like fatigue and bladder problems.

Physical Activity

  • Start with Gentle Exercise: Begin incorporating gentle exercises like walking, yoga, swimming, or cycling into your routine. These activities can improve cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility without overexerting your body.
  • Progress Slowly: Gradually increase the intensity, frequency, and duration of your exercises as your fitness improves. This approach allows your body to adapt and reduces the risk of injury or excessive fatigue.
  • Incorporate Strength Training and Flexibility Exercises: These exercises can help improve muscle strength, balance, and coordination, which are often affected by MS. Start small and consult a physical therapist if needed.
  • Consider Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can provide a customized exercise program for your specific needs. Don’t hesitate to reach to someone within your closest MS community if you need the support.

Stress Management

  • Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Engage in mindfulness and meditation techniques to reduce stress and anxiety, which can worsen MS symptoms. Explore different methods and find what works best for you, whether it's using meditation apps or joining a meditation class.
  • Develop a Regular Sleep Routine: Prioritize good sleep hygiene to improve sleep quality, which can help manage fatigue and other MS symptoms.
  • Consider Therapy or Counseling: Speaking with a therapist or counselor can provide emotional support and help you develop effective coping strategies.

Social and Emotional Health

  • Stay Socially Active: Maintain connections with family and friends to receive emotional support and enhance overall well-being.
  • Join a Support Group: Connect with others who are also living with MS to gain a unique understanding, shared experiences, and practical advice. Look into local support groups or online communities online or in your area.
  • Seek Help When Needed: If you're struggling with your mental health, don't hesitate to reach out to healthcare professionals. Therapies and medications can provide significant assistance.

Regular Medical Checkups

  • Stay in Touch with Your Healthcare Team: Regular appointments allow your healthcare team to monitor your health and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
  • Manage Medications: Understand your medications and take them as directed. Report any side effects to your doctor.
  • Stay Up-to-Date with Vaccines: Stay current with vaccines to protect yourself from preventable illnesses that could potentially worsen your MS symptoms.

I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2011 and I found in the same year a lifestyle program that could slow the progression, maybe even halt it. It took me a few months to feel that I am capable of following that lifestyle (because it meant to give up chocolate…besides other stuff but that was the hardest) and that this was the right path for me. Fast forward to 2018, where my daughter was born. 2019 I felt the repercussions of the birth which resulted in a relapse but being so well for so long and in this positive lifestyle bubble, I didn’t realize I had a relapse. 2020, when the pandemic hit, I had another one and that changed everything because I didn’t start to completely recover anymore. Today I am not only believing in changing your lifestyle but also that medication has its place in my life, hopefully my recovery…but my rock, my base is still the lifestyle program I have been following for the past 12+ years.
